wow, man, somebody used an unusual word!

it's just a word... there's no need to get annoyed or get on someones case for using old English or to be a word Nazi.

thou art a goose, my friend, a silly goose.

Off subject (if that is even relevant anymore) dire, I'm heading up to Denver to see the Pats game this weekend. I was really excited until I checked the weather report: 38 degrees with rain/snow mix. Outstanding. Especially given that it's 89 degrees here today.

other than the very iffy sounding weather - it should be a GREAT game to attend!! lots of mutual respect between Coach B and McDaniels, so it wont be a hate-fest like the Mangina contests.

Enjoy it my friend, go Pats!!, and be safe (dont eat too many rocky mountain oysters)

It seems that this so-called word is also primarily used in GD forum. At least within the archive.org section of the internet.

We should defn keep a sense of humor about it, and hope you are as well...I defn came on a bit strong since, again, I am sure I do this more than anyone (overuse my vocabulary).

Assuming you aren't NC, and may not recall his comment on my smoking jacket prose, I like to think that once he got to know me he realized it really is the way I write, and became tolerant of it, if that makes sense...that was why I reacted the way I did to your comment--we can't really know BaroSong's writing by that little snipet, and the motivation behind the word is really what bothers you...at least I assume so with the Shakesp reference and all...

That said, I do still recognize your point, as I did with NC, and there is something to be said for using simple, direct English as often as possible. But as Rob noted, fun with the English language is so much more entertaining with a large vocabulary, and if you write for a living, it just goes with the territory.

Ha! Looks like Dire wins!

Now, looking at all the good folks that have used it, how can it possibly be such a bad thing? by defn word use establishes norms of behavior, and this one just indicates everyone uses it, so it CANNOT have the status you imply (rare, awkward, idiosyncratic, etc., etc.).

Case closed?

I don't recall saying it was rare. Just that it for some reason irks me to no end when I see it used.

And its frequent use by a certain group certainly indicates a norm - could be some trying to be like others...

Well, then I am not sure of why you think certain words annoy if it isn't that the person using them is pretentious, etc. By defn, rare words are those sorts--if they are common, then why are we having this discussion? You said they are trying to appear intellectual, etc., so obviously you wouldn't say that because they use common words, right?

And, whether by copying or not, once words in the English language are used with high enough frequency, they are established. So, "comprise" now means "compose" because too many twits used it that way...

me·thinks (m-thngks)
intr.v. Past tense me·thought (-thôt) Archaic
It seems to me.
[Middle English me thinkes, from Old English m thyncth : m, to me; see me + thyncth, it seems; see tong- in Indo-European roots.]

It is the short version of "It seems to me" - saves keystrokes. If my memory serves isn't barongsong living in an Indo-European part of the world? Or had lived there? Methought so.

I'm certain its use has to do with more than keystrokes.

Especially with the verbosity of some posters around here.

Well, I have to be at the top of the list...

But, don't you think it's a little harsh? NC really raked me over the coals for appearing pretentious (his "smoking jacket" comment), but if one has a large vocabulary, it is a bit small to critique it, don't ya think?

I understand your point about someone purposefully going out of their way to insert complex words, etc., etc., but if it just comes up as part of how they write, I really think it's more of a comment on the person with the issue as they have to know the motivation of the original writer to make the assessment. On that front, BS is defn not, IMHO, one who does that...Methinks (jeezzz, I've used that one many times here...I mean, "hereabouts").

Does my "hereabouts" piss you off even more?

Last, ironic this came up in the "Ivory Tower" thread, eh?

No offense, my good man!

EDIT: see? I am so pretentious I edit for spelling errors! What a jerk...
